My name is David Watts. I am originally from the
UK, but I have lived in Japan for over 10 years now. I studied Japanese and
Linguistics at Sheffield University and have a Masters Degree in TESOL
(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from The University of
I have taught at various Japanese universities
over the past 10 years, and came to Osaka University in April 2017. Now I teach
Academic Writing and English classes to undergraduate and graduate students,
many of whom have either studied abroad or are planning to do so in the future.
My English language elective classes examine Local and Global Issues, European
Cultures and Societies and Japanese Cultures and Societies. My aim is help all
my students improve their English skills and abilities in all these fields in a
supportive and enjoyable atmosphere.
My research interests include Language Learning
Strategies training and the use of euphemism and cryptolects in various
